Preparing the base

The base of the outdoor pool can be built with gravel or crushed stone, for example.  A well rammed, frost-resistant bottom is the best base for an outdoor pool. Frost insulation can be installed on the base. This way, the earth cannot move, and the outdoor pool stays firmly in place.

Placing concrete paving stones or similar structures under the frame of the outdoor pool and equipment box is a good idea. When installed this way, the bottom frame of the pool and box is left slightly above the ground, and the air also circulates under the frame. For winter use, please make sure that the doors can open even if snow falls in front of them. Therefore, both the outdoor pool and the equipment box should be well clear of the ground.

The wood heater (Rexener Silence) and the equipment box (Rexener Aurora/Polar) must be installed on a flat surface and at the same level as the hot tub. If necessary, ensure the levelness with a spirit level or similar tool.

The base must be able to carry ca. 2,500 kg.

When choosing the location, consider the possibilities for emptying the tub.

Take into account any recommendations or restrictions of your municipality regarding the location and installation of the hot tub.

Embedding the outdoor pool in the terrace

If the outdoor pool is embedded in the terrace, the specifications in this instruction manual and the EN 17125 standard must be given special attention.

All Rexener outdoor pools can be embedded in a terrace as desired.

Confirm the size of the hole you need to make in the terrace from the technical specifications of the Rexener model.

If you want to attach the Rexener insulation cover to the edges of the outdoor pool for locking, the wooden frame of the pool should be left visible at least 15cm from the surface of the terrace.

If you want to completely embed the wooden frame of the outdoor pool in the terrace, you should build the locking system in the terrace or otherwise ensure that the cover stays in place when using the Rexener insulation cover.

When embedding a Rexener Silence outdoor pool, the space needed for the wood heater must be considered.

The wood heater must be separated from the terrace’s wooden parts, and safety distances must be taken into account.

The Rexener Aurora / Polar models should also take into account the equipment box that is attached to the pool. When embedding the product in a terrace, it is very important to ensure that there are no access obstacles for servicing and heating the protective case (Rexener Polar/Aurora) and wood heater (Rexener Silence).

Take into account pool drainage and how will be carried out when the tub is embedded in the terrace. The pool is drained from one side of the pool (confirm this from the technical specifications of the pool).

OUTDOOR POOL INSTALLATION / REXENER SILENCE

SETUP AND USE OF THE REXENER SILENCE MODEL

Before heating
  • Make sure the bottom plug is in place and the pool is properly plugged before you start putting water in the pool
  • The pool must be filled to 5 cm above the uppermost wood heater outlet hole before starting heating.
  • If you start warming the wood heater before the heater’s water container is filled with water, the wood heater will start melting and, at worst, seriously injure the user.
  • Also make sure that the water circulation in the wood heater has not been blocked or plugged before you start heating.
  • Check that there is no leakage at the connections between the heater and the pool. If you detect a leak, the connections must be tightened enough to stop it
  • Please note: Achieving the optimal heating method when using a wood-fired heater takes some practice.
General instructions for heating a wood heater:
  • Do not use lighter fluid to ignite the wood
  • The wood to be burned should preferably be in small pieces
  • Do not use any wood containing nails or any construction waste in the heater, as the aluminium wood heater cannot endure hot metal objects, and they will damage the heater.
  • Adjust the air flow with the controls so that there is always a constant draught.
  • When you heat cold water in a new wood heater, some water may drip from the front corners. This is condensed water, and the dripping will stop once the wood heater has been used a few times.
  • Stir the water in the pool during heating to achieve an even temperature.
Draining the wood heater and pool
  • Drain the water from both the pool and the wood heater
  • The fire in the wood heater must be fully extinguished and the heater must be cooled down before draining the water to avoid dangerous situations and damage.
  • When emptying the pool, the water must be directed into the appropriate waste-water system.
  • When using chemicals, the water must be drained to the sewer to prevent pollution.
  • Open the wood heater’s drain plug at the front corner as well as the pool’s drain valve and the drain plug at the bottom of the pool.
  • The cover of the pool must be left ajar to avoid a vacuum in the pool.
  • If the wood heater is to be stored in freezing temperatures, make sure that all the water has been drained from both the wood heater and the hoses
  • The combustion chamber of the wood heater must be cleaned after use. Clean it with oven cleaning products or similar products designed for cleaning heated surfaces.
Maintaining a wood heater
  • The wood heater’s water jacket must be cleaned regularly to remove any accumulated dirt.
  • The water jacket can be cleaned from the wood heater’s upper outlet by flushing with a water hose, for example.
  • The wood heater’s flue pipes must be cleaned on a regular basis, twice or three times a year.
  • The grates in the wood heater get worn down in use and should be replaced when necessary
  • Check the condition of the grates before heating.
  • If necessary, order a new grate from your nearest dealer or manufacturer.

SETUP AND USE OF THE REXENER POLAR AND AURORA MODELS

General

Read the official manuals of Rexener Bioheater, the mass filter, the circulation pump and the UV-C device and any other accessories before using them. Also, make sure that all users of the heater are familiar with the operating instructions and keep the instructions in the immediate vicinity of the products, but without causing any danger or damage.

Due to its very high power, Rexener Bioheater requires a circulation pump to operate, so that water can circulate through the device at sufficient speed. The circulating pump rotates the water continuously between the pool and the heater, even when the water heater is not running. The circulation pump must be running to allow Rexener Bioheater to detect the temperature of the pool water, and it can shut itself down or start up, if necessary. The pool will also stay cleaner as the water circulates through the filter and the UV-C device evenly and continuously.

High-quality Biodisel, Diesel or fuel oil can be used as fuel. Never use petrol or a similar highly flammable fuel. Flammable fuels may cause an explosion. Take care to keep the transport and filling containers clean so that no contaminants enter the tank. Fuel must always be handled in accordance with safety instructions on handling it.

Starting the heating
  • Rexener Bioheater, circulation pump, tank, UV-C device and mass filter are pre-installed in the equipment box.
  • Make sure that there is sufficient fuel in the tank and refuel if necessary (Biodiesel, Diesel or fuel oil)
  • Check that the valve in the mass filter cover is in the FILTER position. If not, turn it to the correct position.
  • Make sure that the bottom plug of the pool is in place.
  • Start filling the outdoor pool with water
  • Lake water, spring water, tap water and water from your own well are generally suitable for use in an outdoor pool.
  • Make sure that no larger contaminants enter the tub with the water and use a prefilter if necessary.
  • Because of its higher salinity, seawater is not suitable for use with Rexener Bioheater (do not use salt to disinfect pool water either).
  • Rexener Bioheater and the circulation pump can be started when the leg space of the pool is filled with water and the lowest outlets are clearly underwater.
  • You can stop filling the pool when the water is at the level of the upper edge of the pool’s corner rests.
  • You can find out your preferred water level by sitting in the pool in different positions. The number of users and their heights also affect the optimal water level.
  • Connect the electric plugs of the circulation pump and the UV light to the electric socket.
  • Turn the socket on if it is off.
  • Make sure that water is circulating and returning through the pool’s upper outlet
  • Check that Rexener Bioheater’s electric plug is connected to the power socket and press the RESET button on the cable’s switch to connect the power to the heater.
  • From the Rexener Bioheater control panel, select whether you want the heater’s thermostat control to start after a 2-degree or 4-degree drop in temperature.
  • If the power is on, turn it off using the POWER button on the control panel.
  • Hold the DOWN and UP buttons simultaneously for 5 seconds
  • Di F2 or F4 is displayed on the screen
  • Choose the amount of degrees the water temperature is allowed to drop before the heater starts with the DOWN and UP buttons F2 = 2 degrees and F4 = 4 degrees
  • Press the POWER button to lock the selection
  • Press the power button (POWER) on Rexener Bioheater’s control panel. When the heater’s oil burner is started, a signal light (BURN) lights up on the control panel
  • Set the desired temperature with the temperature control button (38°C recommended)
  • Rexener Bioheater may not start properly the first few times and the text ERR will appear on the control panel
  • Press the POWER button on the control panel 2–3 more times if necessary. If the heater still does not start, manually vent the fuel line. There are instructions on how to vent the fuel line on the inside of Rexener Bioheater’s door.
  • After the heater is turned on, the hot tub will reach the temperature of 38°C in a few hours (if set at 38°C)
  • When the desired temperature is reached, the oil burner will turn off and restart when the temperature has dropped by the number of degrees you set.
  • In the event of a power failure, Rexener Bioheater will not restart automatically and must be restarted from the control panel
  • The circulation pump restarts normally after power failure
End of use
  • When you want to stop bathing, you can leave the water heating on and put on the insulation cover. This way, your outdoor pool is always ready.
  • You can also lower the pool water’s temperature to the desired maintenance temperature after use (e.g. 15°C). The next time you want to enter the pool, you can use the control panel to set the heating to the desired temperature and the water heats in an instant.
  • If you want to drain water from the pool or turn off the heating completely, see the section WINTER USE AND KEEPING THE POOL EMPTY
  • Although the circulation pumps of the Rexener Polar and Aurora models include prefiltering, we recommend using a mass filter and UV light if you keep the water in the pool for longer periods. When used properly, the pool water stays clean and clear for a long time. How often you need to change the pool water depends largely on the manner of the outdoor pool’s use. With time, you will learn how to clean the pool and how often to change the water.

CLEANING THE OUTDOOR POOL

Fibreglass

The fibreglass outdoor pool is easy to keep clean. Dirt easily accumulates at the waterline, which is why it is a good idea to wipe the waterline weekly or more often, depending on the use. If you use the outdoor pool often, you should wipe the inside of the pool below the water level every month or two. A damp, soft cloth is a good cleaning tool for fibreglass. Before wiping the pool, always make sure that there are no larger pebbles or other dirt on the edges of the pool that may scratch the fibreglass.

The water must meet swimming water criteria: the pH value must be correct, and the chemicals must be dosed in accordance with instructions.  In normal use, the pool has little need for maintenance.

If the pool’s fibreglass (gelcoat) surface requires polishing or grinding, devices/products intended for boat care are suitable for treating the surfaces. However, always test the products on a small area first and check their compatibility.

Once you drain the water from the pool, the pool should be rinsed thoroughly. If pool care products such as chemicals are used in the pool, the water’s pH must be monitored closely to avoid damage.

We recommend that Rexener outdoor pools be cleaned thoroughly once per year. Detergents suitable for plastic surfaces can be used for cleaning. Edges and surfaces should be cleaned with a damp cloth. When necessary, stuck dirt can be removed from pool surfaces with a magic sponge, for example. Abrasive materials must not be used.

When draining the pool, the water must be directed into the appropriate waste-water system. When using chemicals, the water must be drained to the sewer to prevent environmental pollution.

Treating wooden frame surfaces

Oiled spruce panels retain their colour well, but it is recommended to repeat the surface treatment when needed. The manufacture of outdoor pools uses the colour Rexener Grey, which has been specifically created for Rexener products. Wood preservative has been added to Rexener Grey. You can buy this original colour from the nearest Rexener dealer or from Rexener’s online store. With the original Rexener paint, you ensure the best possible durability for the wooden frame surfaces in all conditions, in a shade that matches the pool.

If you wish, you can also use some other paint suitable for the treatment of the frame’s wooden surfaces. In general, suitable products include the most common wood oils and glazes, both water- and solvent-based. Always make sure that the product is suitable for the surface you want to treat and test it on a small area before treating the entire pool. The warranty does not cover faults caused by the use of an unsuitable finish.

LED POOL LIGHTS

General
  • Rexener Aurora and Polar outdoor pools are equipped with pool lights.
  • The RGB pool light is adjusted with a remote control.
  • The pool has no separate button to control the lights. The lights are turned on and off by pressing the remote-control button.
  • You can leave on only one light or use several pre-programmed colour programmes by operating the remote control.
  • The remote control must not be touched with wet hands, because it is not water resistant.
  • The remote control should be stored in a warm place indoors.

WHAT IS UV-LIGHT?

What is UV-light?

– Before passing through the Rexener Bioheater, water passes through a UVC device with a UV light.

– UV light is for clarifying water.

– UV light prevents the formation of algae and reduces potential pathogens in the water.

– UV light is based on ultraviolet radiation, which causes changes in both animal and plant cells.

– UV light clarifies the pool water and minimizes the need for chemical disinfection.

– UV light can also reduce chlorine odor.

– When the power cord for UV light is plugged in, the UV light turns on.

– Always turn off the UV light to avoid overheating when there is no water flowing through the UVC device.

– The UV device stays in good condition when you remember to clean the protective glass of the UV light  2-3 times a year.

– The effective life of the UV lamp is about 4,000 hours. We recommend replacing the lamp once a year.

General
  • Water is circulated through the circulation pump to the mass filter and then through the UV-C device to Rexener Bioheater.
  • The circulation pump is equipped with a prefilter that immediately catches larger debris.
  • Do not open the cover of the circulation pump’s prefilter while the water is circulating. The O-ring located under the cover comes off easily and is difficult to put back in place.
  • The equipment box comes with a metal tool that makes it easy to tighten and loosen the prefilter’s transparent cover if you cannot do it by hand.
  • When using the tool, it is advisable to take the tank out of the equipment box and move the mass filter slightly so that you have room to work and the tool has space to turn.
  • Check the prefilter periodically and drain and wash it when necessary.
  • The circulation pump starts working as soon as you plug in the electric cable.
  • When the power returns after a power failure, the circulation pump will continue to operate normally.

MASS FILTER

General
  • After passing through the circulation pump, the water circulates to the mass filter, which catches the smaller dirt.
  • The inside of the mass filter contains filter fibre, also known as fibre balls.
  • You should occasionally check the condition of the fibre balls.
  • Fibre balls can be washed and reused a few times.
  • If the fibre balls are clearly dirty or damaged, you should replace them with new ones.
  • When replacing the fibre balls, make sure that the number of fibre balls is suited the mass filter’s needs.
  • It is not recommended to use the BACKWASH function of the mass filter with fibre balls
  • Always keep the filter cover in the FILTER position so that water is filtered through the fibre balls

UV-C DEVICE

General
  • Before reaching Rexener Bioheater, the water passes through the UV-C device with UV light.
  • The purpose of the UV light is to clarify the water.
  • UV light prevents the formation of algae and reduces the amount of possible pathogens in the water.
  • UV light’s effects are based on ultraviolet radiation, which causes changes in both animal and plant cells.
  • UV light clarifies the pool water and reduces the need for chemical disinfection to a minimum.
  • UV light can also reduce the smell of chlorine.
  • The UV light will turn on when the electric cable of the UV light is connected to the power outlet.
  • To avoid overheating, always turn off the UV light when water is not circulating through the UV-C device.
  • The UV system will remain in good condition as long as you remember to clean the UV light safety glass 2–3 times per year.
  • The effective operating time of the UV lamp is approximately 4,000 hours. We recommend replacing the lamp once a year
  • You can purchase a new UV lamp from your nearest dealer or at www.rexener.com

REXENER BIOHEATER

General
  • Read the Rexener Bioheater Manual carefully and store it near the heater
  • Rexener Bioheater uses a very efficient and quiet oil burner
  • Biodiesel is recommended as the fuel, but the heater also works perfectly with diesel or fuel oil.
  • Use winter grade fuel when the outdoor temperature is less than 10°C
  • Requires a very small amount of electricity to operate
  • Lake water, spring water, tap water and water from your own well are generally suitable for use in a heater.
  • Because of its higher salinity, seawater is not suitable for use with Rexener Bioheater (do not use salt for disinfection either)
  • Electronically controlled safety features ensure the safe use of the heater in all conditions (the features include overheating protection, water level control, flame guard, automatic extinguishing and diagnostic function)
  • Make sure that no water or contaminants enter the heater tank
Cleaning and maintenance
  • Cleaning and maintenance must be carried out regularly by someone proficient in them
  • Seasonal maintenance must be carried out on the heater once a year, or the warranty will be void
  • You can order maintenance service from the importer or do it yourself
  • The service kit contains the parts needed for maintenance, and it can be ordered from your nearest dealer or at rexener.com
  • The maintenance is easy to carry out and the service kit includes illustrated instructions on how to carry out the maintenance

WINTER USE IN FREEZING TEMPERATURES

General

Rexener outdoor pools have been designed for the demanding conditions of the north. The pools are strongly frost-resistant when properly used and maintained. You can use them without worry even during severe frosts, but you can also drain them and leave them empty in freezing temperatures without fear of anything being damaged, as long as you follow the instructions.

Setting up the outdoor pool at freezing temperatures
  • The possible installation of the outdoor pool is done according to the installation instructions.
  • Consider how snow and frost may affect the installation
  • The Rexener (Aurora and Polar) outdoor pools’ circulation pump drains more completely than normal circulation pumps, and this ensures that it can be used even in freezing temperatures.
  • Open the cover of the circulation pump located in the equipment box and pour about 1L of warm water into the pump. This will melt any small ice deposits and allow the circulation pump to operate normally.
  • If the circulation pump does not have a cover or you cannot get the cover open, find another way to pour warm water into the pump
  • If any water channel has been frozen, it must be defrosted before starting the pump and the heater.
  • During freezing temperatures, always put enough warm water in the pool first to ensure that the pump and water channels are open and that the water flows freely through the piping.
Using the outdoor pool at freezing temperatures
  • In winter use, it is important to make sure that the pool’s drainage pipe is empty and cannot freeze.
  • When you drain the pool through its bottom plug, the drainage pipe will remain empty and no problems will be caused by the pipe freezing over. If the end of the drainage pipe is sealed and the tub’s bottom plug of is open, some water may remain in the drainage pipe, and the freezing of this water may cause the pipe to crack.
  • All outdoor pools must use the pool bottom plug.
  • The pool can be used in cold weather just like it can in warm weather.
  • In winter use, it is important to pay particular attention to ice blockages in water channels.
  • Water must not be allowed to freeze in either heating method (Wood Heater/Rexener Bioheater). Maintain a sufficient water temperature to avoid freezing.
  • Rexener Wood Heater (Rexener Silence) must not be used if ice is detected in the water piping or heater, and water cannot circulate normally.
  • If you notice that the water channels are frozen, you must detach the wood heater and take it to a warm space to thaw.
  • Remember to keep the insulation cover on the hot tub during cold weather whenever you don’t bathe, because most of the heat evaporates from the top the tub.
Outdoor pool drainage and maintenance (Aurora / Polar)
  • Turn off Rexener Bioheater
  • Unplug Rexener Bioheater, the UV light and the circulation pump from the electric socket or turn the socket off (Aurora and Polar)
  • When emptying the outdoor pool, the water must be directed into the appropriate waste-water system.
  • When using chemicals, the water must be drained to the sewer to prevent environmental pollution.
  • Make sure that the water to be drained does not pose a risk of freezing or cause damage to the drainage site or environment in freezing temperatures
  • Drain the outdoor pool of water using the drainage outlet on the side of the pool.
  • While the pool is draining, you should wash or at least clean it so that dirt does not get stuck on the pool.
  • When the water has been drained from the pool, open all possible taps and drain plugs from the equipment box
    • Rexener Bioheater’s tap is attached by hose to the other door of the equipment box. If you wish, you can connect a longer hose.
    • The plug of the circulation pump is at the narrower end of the pump. Unscrew it
    • The tap of the mass filter is located at the filter’s bottom. Unscrew it. If there are 2 taps, always open the bottom tap as well.
    • Remove the fibre balls from the mass filter. They may start stinking when they’re warm, and they can freeze during cold weather. If you don’t want to remove the fibre balls during freezing temperatures, they will start working normally once the warm water thaws them.
  • Store the pool bottom plug for the next use or leave it at the bottom of the pool
  • Keep the jet system on for about 30 seconds
  • Disconnect the extension cord connected to the equipment box and store it in a dry place
  • Dry the edges of the pool
  • Put the Rexener insulation cover in place and attach it to the outdoor pool
  • If the winter is very snowy, remember to clear most of the snow off the outdoor pool’s cover and the roof of the equipment box

WOOD AS MATERIAL

General

You have done the smart thing and chosen an outdoor pool with wooden frames instead of a mass-made plastic whirlpool bath. All our outdoor pools are handmade from genuine certified northern wood.

Wood is a hygroscopic material, which means that it has the ability to bind and release moisture according to changes in relative humidity. The moisture content of wood is always at equilibrium with its surroundings. Wood retains its hygroscopic properties at all stages, as even surface treatments only slow down the changes in its moisture content.

As a result of fluctuations in humidity, wood shrinks or swells and transforms. As anisotropic material (it has different properties in different directions), wood’s longitudinal moisture content is low, but its transverse moisture content is significant.

Because wood lives, not all walls of the outdoor pool and equipment box are fully connected to each other but require small gaps between them. The moisture must also be able to leave the structures of pool. Rexener Bioheater (Polar and Aurora) also needs oxygen for heating (burner) and combustion. This is why it is important that you do not seal the gaps completely, especially in the equipment box.

Wood can also secrete resin. Resin is a mixture of essential oils and rosins made up mostly of terpenes that are secreted by plants into the resin cavities and ducts between resinous cells. The resin secreted by wood protects the wood from bacteria, pests and fungi.

Because wood is a natural material, no board or panel is identical and small differences can be found between them.

GLASS FIBRE AS MATERIAL

General

The interiors of Rexener outdoor pools are made of durable fibreglass. Fibreglass is a material made of very narrow strands of glass. Rexener outdoor pools use high quality fibreglass because it is lightweight and waterproof and does not suffer from corrosion or decomposition. Fibreglass is also an expensive-looking and long-lasting material.

The fibreglass part of the pool is also made entirely by hand and so each pool is unique. The handmade nature of the pool may also be visible when looking closely at the fibreglass surface.

Fibreglass can be repaired if necessary. Before doing so, please contact the importer to receive the correct instructions and, if necessary, to purchase a Rexener repair kit.

BRAND

General

Each Rexener outdoor pool we complete undergoes various phased inspections and tests. Each pool is tested for water-tightness, for example. The Polar and Aurora models’ lights, jets and LEDs as well as other possible accessories have also been tested before the final completion of the outdoor pool.

Once all this is done, the outdoor pool receives the Rexener brand, which means it has been Rexener-certified. Products with this brand have a guarantee of quality and traditional Nordic craftsmanship. The brand is the crafter’s final farewell to the product for which they have donated their time and expertise.
